MASSAGE CONTRAINDICATIONS

There are instances when a bodywork is not permitted due to some conditions present in the client. That is why it is important for us to take necessary information from our clients prior to a therapy. Clients should completely fill up the client intake form so as to address possible modifications in the treatment and establish a safe and healthy session with our therapists.



Contraindication

Presence of a disease or physical condition making the act of treating a particular client in the usual manner impossible or undesirable.



Absolute Contraindication

Conditions in which massage is inappropriate, not advised, and may be harmful to the client. Some client conditions are the following:

  • Presence widespread inflammation as manifested by high grade fever or if the condition is acute or exacerbated (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, metastatic cancer)
  • Presence of infectious diseases (fungal, bacterial or viral) that may be contagious (e.g. strep tonsillitis, TB, pneumonia, scabies, viral colds)
  • Presence of a medical emergency (meningitis, appendicitis)
  • Heavy alcohol intoxication
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Uncontrolled hypertension

Local Contraindication

Conditions in which massage can be administered while avoiding the infected/affected area or area in question. Some client conditions are the following:

  • The area in question is confined to a small space that can easily avoided (e.g. athlete’s foot, acne)
  • Presence of lumps, masses or painful moles
  • Presence of an injury that is less than 72 hours old (e.g. sprain)
  • Presence of inflamed area (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome, insect bite)
